I’ve wanted to do a photoshoot like this for a long time — a photoshoot where I could simply be myself. Not everyone needs to laugh in every photo, and Bangkok is certainly more than temples and perfectly posed tourist pictures. I’m approaching 40. I didn’t want a commercial, assembly-line photoshoot where everyone ends up looking beautiful in exactly the same way. I wanted every photo to feel like me. It started with the makeup. I told the makeup artist that I would bring my own clothes, and that I didn’t want a trendy influencer look. I wanted makeup that suited my age, my features and my state of mind. They understood exactly what I meant. This is honestly my favourite makeup look in years. When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t think, “wow, I look younger.” I thought: “yes, this is me.” I was also very happy that they recommended a female photographer whose style is more focused on street photography. We went to Bangkok’s Chinatown and simply walked around. I could buy wonton noodles from a street stall, stop for a juice, look around, talk, or do nothing at all. There wasn’t much posing. No one forced me to laugh when I didn’t feel like laughing, or asked me to constantly perform for the camera. It felt less like a photoshoot and more like someone quietly documenting an evening of my life. And perhaps that’s why I love the photos so much. Time leaves its marks not only on our faces, but also on our state of mind. I don’t want to hide either of them. This is the gift I chose for myself before turning 40 — to record the mature version of me, exactly as I am at this moment. Not trying to look younger. Not trying to be someone else. Just me — and I think that is enough.
